Algae cultivation in digestate

24 April 2018 by Margherita Leoni

Digestate contains many nutrients and can be a potential food source for algae. This saves money spent on fertiliser. Initial lab trials (with e.g. beef manure and chicken manure digestate) showed that algae will grow on digestate when added sufficiently diluted. The colour and the organic matter contained in digestate are points that need attention. A practical test in the ACREES algae pond with light fraction of the digestate from the ACRRES digester, showed that the organic matter is harvested along with the harvesting of the algae. This is not allowed if the algae are to be used for animal feed. Therefore further examination is needed before treatment to obtain a product that is clearer and free of organic matter.
